Event Overview:

This course will review the state of the art in the management of the OFP/TMD patient. The course is designed for the non-Orofacial Pain Practice provider practicing general dentistry or other dental specialties. The course attendee will understand the current classification systems used for OFP/TMD and the diagnostic criteria for OFP disorders. The course will review medical management, occlusal appliance, and injection therapies for the TMD/OFP patient. The attendee will be familiar with the principles for managing occlusal instability in the TMD/OFP patient. 

Learning Objectives:

  • Understand the state of the art for pain management of the dental patient
  • Be familiar with the most recent diagnosis/classification systems for TMD and OFP
  • Understand the examination process for the TMD patient
  • Understand the standard of care for medical management of the TMD patient 
  • Be familiar with the standard of care for the OFP patient

Speaker Bio:

Dr. Jeffry Shaefer is a dentist and board-certified specialist in the field of orofacial pain, currently serving as Assistant Professor at the Harvard School of Dental Medicine (HSDM) and Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH). His clinical practice at both of these institutions is focused on the clinical diagnosis and management of temporomandibular disorders and orofacial pain conditions. After serving the first half of his career as a dental surgeon with the US Air Force throughout various countries in Europe, he dedicated the latter half of his career to orofacial pain, both in its clinical practice and education to dental students and residents. Beginning in 1999, he has been responsible for training both pre-doctoral and post-doctoral dental students in pain and anxiety management. This includes teaching the diagnosis and management of orofacial pain, administration of anesthesia, pharmacology of pain control, and conscious sedation training.
